Signals for level crossings

On secondary lines the functioning of automatic level crossings is monitored by the driver by means of level crossing supervision signals. On level crossings without barriers and road signals whistle posts may be provided.

Track contact post and diamond board

Schaltstellenpflock

Track contact post (Schaltstellenpflock) § 40 (9)
Marks the position of the track contact that operates the automatic level crossing when there is no level crossing supervision signal (i.e. level crossing is not monitored by the driver). Trains should not stop on the track contact. On the top of the post the position of the level crossing is noted.

Rautentafel
Mast

Diamond board (Rautentafel) § 39 (6)
Like the above but warns of a following level crossing supervision signal (i.e. level crossing is monitored by the driver).

Normal position
In its normal position the signal shows a steady yellow light (or a retro-reflecting circle). If it remains in this position when the train passes it, the following level crossing is not secured. In this case the train must stop at the level crossing and may proceed after whistling or after operating the level crossing manually.

Level crossing is secured (Eisenbahnkreuzung gesichert) § 39 (3)
If the yellow light is flashing, the level crossing may be passed without restriction.

§ 39 (5)
If level crossings are located at very short distances, one level crossing signal may be sufficient to secure them all. An additional board informs the driver how many level crossings follow the level crossing signal (In this example there are three. »EK« is the abbreviation for »Eisenbahn-Kreuzung« which means »level crossing«).

3 EK Ende

After the last level crossing an end signal is provided, which shows the same number crossed out.

Whistle posts

Pfeifpflock

Whistle post (Pfeifpflock) § 40 (1)

Gruppenpfeifpflock

Group whistle post (Gruppenpfeifpflock) § 40 (5)
If there are several level crossings following at short distances this post marks the beginning of the area where the driver has to whistle repeatedly.

Endpflock

End whistle post (Endpflock) § 40 (6)
Marks the end of the area started by the group whistle post.

Example

Normal position. Train is approaching.
Beispiel Eisenbahnkreuzung 1
