Distant signals

Vorsignal (Profil)
Mast

Standard profile. On most signals the lamp in the lower right corner is missing (it's only needed for »proceed aspect 5*«).

Mast
Vorsignal (Profil)

Distant signal which is only capable of showing ''warning'' and »proceed aspect 2*«.

Vorsignal (Profil)
Mast

Two aspect distant signal which can only show two aspects: »warning« and »main signal shows clear« (without speed indication).

Hauptsignal (Lampenanordnung)
Mast

Arrangment and number of lamps may vary.

Hauptsignal (Lampenanordnung)
Mast

The lower right lamp is the so-called »emergency red«. It lights up when the other red lamp fails (e.g. burns out).

Signal aspects

See also Austrian and Swiss main signals compared

The proceed aspects have numbers to identify them. Proceed aspects of distant signals have the same number as main signals plus an asterisk. Please note that »proceed aspect 4« doesn't exist (any more).

(Kurze Fahrt)

Clear to proceed with 40 km/h (or other speed limit according to service time table). The next signal (which can be a main or obstruction signal or a buffer stop with red light) is located at short distance and shows ''stop''.

Ankündigung Freie Fahrt
Mast

Distant signal:

Main signal shows clear
(Ankündigung Freie Fahrt)

This signal informs the engine driver that the points are not locked and that therefore he has to observe the turnout signals! For this reason the entry speed is restricted to 40 km/h.

(Fortunately such installations are already relatvely rare. Most of them can be found on private railways. Nevertheless it's almost unbelievable that such signalling still exists!).

up

Dwarf main signals

In freight and marshalling yards with a maximum speed of 40 km/h so-called dwarf main signals may be provided instead of normal main signals. They are mounted near the ground (in installations with dwarf signals directly on a dwarf signal).

Main and distand signal on the same mast

If the distance between main signals is approximately as long as the distance between distant and main signal, distant signals are attached on the mast of the preceeding main signal (or combined signals are provided). Distant signals of exit signals are (in general) always combined with the entry signal.

Vorsignal System L

A distant signal which is combined with a main signal never shows a proceed aspect if the latter shows ''stop''. It either shows ''warning'' (regardless of the aspect of the following main signal) or remains dark (see columns »a« and »b«).

Note the difference to Austria and Germany (H/V-System) where in this case the distant signal always remains dark.

If the main signal shows ''clear with 40 km/h, expect short distance stop'' (proceed aspect 6) or if there is a lit track occupied signal the distant signal also remains dark (column »c«).

Repeating signals

If the sighting distance to the main signal is insufficient additional distant signals are provided as repeating signals. They show exactly the same aspect as the distant signal.

Drive at sight beginning from the first turnout. (Fahrt auf Sicht ab der ersten Weiche)
This aspect is shown at the entry signal (e.g. at Les Bois, Les Reussilles and La Ferrière).
